Santos Ofícios is
exclusively dedicated to the Portuguese folk art. Each item,
strictly chosen, is related to a specific region of the country.
Santos Ofícios is
located in Rua da Madalena nº 87, in a building classified since 1978 as
an “edifice of public interest”, which stands in a protected area of
Lisbon called Baixa Pombalina. This building belonged to the Count of
Soure and was constructed after the big earthquake in 1755 on the ruins
of Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Freire Church.
The interior of
Santos Ofícios was submitted to a very careful work of reconstruction,
which made it possible to show arches of an old brick that draw a cross
and also to preserve an entire wall of tiles made in Rato factory at
that time.
It is inside this
historical place that handworks made of many different materials are
displayed: stone, clay, metal, corn, wood, cork, wool, cotton, paper,
jute, straw…
Santos
Ofícios stands in the way to the Cathedral and the Castle, opposite
Madalena Church.
Santos Ofícios is
open every day, except on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to
8 p.m.and the main Tourist Guides (Lonely Planet, Michelin, Routard;
etc.) refer to it as a place you should not miss.
